Beer Can House

The Beer Can House is a quirky and iconic landmark in Lightning Ridge, New South Wales. Constructed between December 1977 and February 1978 by miner Gary Holms, his wife Pat, and their four children, this unique dwelling was built using steel beer cans—the last year they were produced—after finding that large rocks were too heavy for the children to handle. The house features inventive elements like windows made from fruit boxes and round windows crafted from the bottom of a "puddler," reflecting the resourcefulness of its creators.

Located along the Green Car Door Tour, a self-guided drive showcasing some of Lightning Ridge's most fascinating attractions, the Beer Can House is a must-see. Visitors can explore the house, sign the guest book tucked inside an old fridge, and appreciate the creativity and history embedded in this outback treasure.

For those interested in exploring more of Lightning Ridge's unique sites, the Green Car Door Tour also includes stops like Nettleton’s First Shaft Lookout, the Stone Labyrinth, and the Opal Tree. Maps for the tour are available at the Lightning Ridge Visitor Information Centre.

Experience the charm and ingenuity of Lightning Ridge through the Beer Can House—a testament to the town's rich history and creative spirit.
